The Son of Sam was unknown to the city of New York. A psycho who roamed the streets, baffling police with his random killings of random people. They thought they were never going to catch him, but a key piece of who he was came about after another incident. Prior to this, David had inflicted his rage upon numerous others (Christine Freud, John Diel, and Virginia Voskerichian) wounding some and killing others, but the next murder was something different.
Valentina and her boyfriend sat in their car near Hutchinson River (not far from where his first victim was murdered) spending some private time with eachother when another car rolled up next to them. Before they could realize what was going on, Berkowitz (the driver of the other car) fired two shots at each of them. Valentina died immediately from a gunshot wound to the face and her boyfriend Alexander died hours later in the hospital. Police analyzed the crime scene and found all of the same clues from numerous previous attacks. The .44 caliber shells and the slugs mutilated so that they could not be traced, a random couple in a public location, and the bodies just left. The unique thing about this murder was that he left behind a letter. The letter was addressed to the police captain stating that the killer's name was the Son of Sam. This letter was followed up by many others to create a sort of celebrity profile for David. He ingrained himself in the media and tried to get people to really fear him, as well as idolize him.
